Common Hair Mistakes

Gentlemen, we’ve probably all been there at one time in our lives -- a time when we’re looking to change up our hairstyle. Of course, there are all kinds of questions that run through your head. Will this new style look good on me? How do I achieve it? What products do I use? Where do I even start? You probably do a little research online, ask some friends, check out the men’s grooming aisle and choose the coolest looking label, or just use whatever product is convenient. Not exactly the best process You’ll probably end up with a style that doesn’t work for you, leaving you frustrated and confused. However, it’s not the product’s fault, it’s yours. (We don’t mean that in a bad way.)

You’re not using the right product

There are two variables with any given hairstyle. First: What style are you trying to achieve? Matte, slick, or curly? The second: What kind of hair do you have? Thick, long, wavy, short, fine, or thinning? These factors are important because a product your friend might be using or the product with the coolest label might not be right for you. So do yourself a favor and make sure to read the labels and instructions, thoroughly, before you use them. You’ll be doing yourself and your hair a favor -- and you’ll quite possibly save yourself some money by not picking up the wrong product.

Emulsify your product

Wait, what? You don’t just take a nickel-sized amount of product and put it directly into your hair? OK, we’ll stop with the condescending remarks here, but seriously, you have to fully emulsify your product, not half emulsify so little splotches turn up in your hair, you have to fully emulsify.

Still not quite sure? Check out this video to see how to emulsify products properly:

Using too much product

Unfortunately, there are still times when we see grown men using way too much product. Less is always more in this case, and with most things in life. You can always add a little more product if your style isn’t looking the way you want, but taking product out from your hair is far more difficult. Basically, you’re going to have to get in the shower with the Shampoo again. And that’s just wasting water.

Pre Style

Hair styling products are great, but they aren’t works of pure magic. Help them to help you by doing some work on your hair beforehand. Whether that means blow drying your hair in the direction you want it to sit, Shampooing and Conditioning with the right product for your hair type (See here) or brushing your hair to remove knots and tangles, it all helps in the long run to achieve your desired style.
